Booz Allen Hamilton
Published in 2016, Hello Friend is a recruiting anthology of Booz Allen Cyber's missions, projects, and perspectives. Through a series of original stories and ads and with a playful nod to popular TV series Mr. Robot, Hello Friend's verbal and visual language established a new technical tone and language system for Booz Allen’s cyber capability.
I served as lead writer, strategist, and editor for Hello Friend, authoring stories like "Catching the 21st Century Bank Robber" and "The Red Team Challenge," as well as all of the product and program ads throughout the anthology. This was a wildly satisfying project, one that required a technical understanding of concepts like penetration testing, vulnerabilities and exploitation, as well as the mindset of cybersecurity engineers.
Created in interactive digital and print editions to attract and recruit cyber engineers, the anthology features in-depth stories, as well as product and program ads that reflect the distributed vulnerabilities of a connected, digital world. Story content was rendered in a matter-of-fact tone and formatted to mirror an integrated development environment. Case study designs run valid code and are anchored by 8-bit footers, and product ads feature solvable rebus puzzles to engage readers. Additional Easter eggs—like symbols of hacker groups hidden between the gate folds of industrial control systems stories—offer satirical nods to larger security conversations.
